If you're clearing out a kitchen, upgrading your laundry room, or staging your home for sale, one of the first questions we hear at Marlin EZ Storage is some version of this: "I've got a refrigerator, a washer, and a dryer — what size unit do I actually need?"

It's a fair question, and it's one worth answering right. Appliances are bulky, oddly shaped, and they don't stack the way boxes do. Rent too small and nothing fits. Rent too large and you're paying for space you don't need. Here's a straightforward guide based on what we actually see Marlin and Falls County families storing every day.

Why Appliance Storage Is Different

Most things you put in storage stack. Boxes go on top of boxes. Furniture can be arranged. Appliances don't work that way — they stand alone, take up floor space, and their footprint drives the decision more than how many you have.

A few things worth knowing before you rent:

  • Measure before you show up. Refrigerators especially vary more than most people expect — know your dimensions before you pick a unit size.
  • Leave yourself room to move. If there's any chance you'll need to get something out mid-storage, don't pack the unit so tight you can't get back to it.
  • Think about the Texas heat. Our summers are no joke. Extreme heat over time can damage rubber seals and electronic components on appliances. If you're planning to store long-term, that's worth factoring into your decision from the start.

Which Unit Size Do You Need for Your Appliances?

5×10 — $45/month About the size of a walk-in closet. The right call when you're storing one or two smaller appliances — a washer or dryer (not both), a compact refrigerator or small chest freezer, a dishwasher, or a collection of countertop appliances alongside boxes or other household items.

If you're in between moves, clearing one room, or just need a landing spot for a couple of appliances, a 5×10 handles it.

10×10 — $65/month About the size of a standard bedroom — and where most appliance storage situations land comfortably. A washer and dryer together, a full-size refrigerator, a chest freezer with room to spare, or the full contents of a kitchen combined with furniture and boxes.

If you're renovating, staging your home, or working through a move and need a real staging area for your appliances, a 10×10 is usually the right answer.

10×20 — $85/month About the size of a one-car garage. This is for the bigger situations — appliances plus a full household of furniture, oversized appliances like a double-door refrigerator or commercial-grade range, or everything from a large home that needs to be cleared out while life gets reorganized.

If you need room to walk around, work, and access things without playing Tetris, this is your unit.

Quick Reference — Appliances by Unit Size

  • Mini fridge or compact refrigerator → 5×10
  • Washer or dryer (one, not both) → 5×10
  • Dishwasher → 5×10
  • Washer and dryer together → 10×10
  • Full-size refrigerator → 10×10
  • Refrigerator, washer, and dryer together → 10×10 to 10×20
  • Full kitchen appliances plus furniture → 10×20

A Few Tips for Storing Appliances the Right Way

  • Clean everything thoroughly first. Moisture, food residue, and detergent residue are the main causes of mold and odors in storage — especially in Texas humidity. A few extra minutes before you load saves real headaches later.
  • Leave refrigerator and washer doors slightly open if you can. Airflow prevents mildew from developing during storage.
  • Secure loose parts. Shelves, drawers, and racks should be removed or secured so they don't shift in transit.
  • Don't lay appliances on their side unless the manufacturer says it's okay. Refrigerators and washing machines can be damaged when stored horizontally — when in doubt, keep them upright.
